Lab Training

Before being assigned a student, you will need to attend two sessions of Literacy Lab. Labs are held Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 1-2:30 and 5:30-7:00 pm.

Lab #1 : You will observe and participate to get a feel for teaching and the students. After lab, you will meet with the Literacy Specialist to schedule and discuss your lesson for Lab #2.

Lab #2: You will teach a short (10 minute) lesson and receive feedback from the Literacy Specialist.

Once the we have reviewed your application and the Literacy Specialist has approved your lab training, you will be assigned to a student.  When a student is identified that matches your preferences (on application), a staff member will contact you to schedule a time to meet your new student. At the “new pair meeting” the tutor and student will decide on a time and place to meet for tutoring sessions and discuss the student’s personal and skill goals. The staff member will suggest and check out materials based on the student’s needs.

As soon as possible, after being paired, we ask that you complete Tutor Training. Tutor Training will prepare you for your one-on-one tutoring experience. This training discusses lesson planning, goal setting, and provides several examples and ideas on how to teach different literacy topics. Tutor Training assures you are providing your student with the best support.
