New students complete the follow steps:
Step 1: Attend a student orientation
Meet with a Project Read staff member to learn about program requirements, fill out paperwork, and set individual goals. Project Read charges a $20 annual fee and a $20 refundable book fee.
Step 2: Take a placement test
There is a series of two (for native English speakers) or three (for non-native English speakers) tests students must take upon entry to the program. All students are given an Appraisal and the Comprehensive Adult Student Assessment System (CASAS) to determine ability in reading, language, and math. Non-native English speakers also take an English proficiency test to assess their ability to understand English.
Step 3: Attend a lab
Before being paired with a tutor, students must complete 3 hours (2 sessions) of lab. After pairing, students are expected to continue lab attendance 3 hours each week.
Step 4: Meet your tutor
Once students have been assessed and their lab hours are completed, they are paired with a tutor based upon availability and other preferences. Once a suitable match has been made, the tutor and student will meet in a new pair meeting overseen by a staff member to arrange a time and place to meet each week. Materials are assigned based on the student’s needs, abilities, and goals.
Step 5: Participate
Students commit to 3 hours of one-on-one tutoring and 3 hours of lab per week, totaling 6 hours of instruction every week, for at least 6 months. Once paired, tutors and students begin meeting for their one-on-one tutoring sessions at an arranged time and approved public location. Students also continue coming to lab for 3 hours per week to help build on what they’re learning with their tutor.
Step 6: Continued assessment
Every 40 hours of instruction (one-on-one-tutoring and lab instruction) students are expected to post-test in order to track progress and guide future instruction. When 40 hours have been completed, a staff member will contact the student to schedule a testing appointment. Test results will be shared with the student’s tutor.
