All volunteers must be at least 18 years of age and have a high school diploma or GED equivalent. Volunteers are expected to submit session reports, act as a mature, responsible adults at all times, and respect the privacy and confidentiality of all Project Read students.
Anyone wishing to borrow books from Project Read’s library must pay a materials fee of $20. This is fully refundable when you leave the program if you’ve met the minimum commitment requirements and all checked out materials have been returned.
Volunteer Opportunities
One-on-one tutor
Meet one-on-one with an adult literacy student to improve English literacy skills and assist him or her in using those skills to meet self-identified goals. Responsibilities include the following:
- Commit 6 months to Project Read
- Meet with your student 3 hours each week
- Prepare lessons for your student
- Complete required trainings
- Attend additional training and skill-enhancement workshops
- Encourage your student to keep commitments
- Weekly reports to staff about hours and progress
Lab volunteer
Assist the Lab Instructors in teaching small groups of students and help students in lab with their personal reading and writing projects. Responsibilities include the following:
- Attend labs at least once a month (see Calendar for days and times)
- Participate in lab discussions and activities
- Help students one-on-one on personal assignments and projects, as needed
- Prepare and teach lessons in small-group settings, as needed
Office volunteer
Assist the Project Read staff with various projects as they arise. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Respond to emails regarding current or upcoming projects
- Organize resource materials
- Prepare student and tutor orientation packets
- Alphabetize, file, and update student records
- Level books for the Project Read lending library
- Write book summaries, grant applications, press releases, etc.
- Social Media posts
- Prepare lessons plans for specific topics
- Maintain Project Read website and online resources

Events Volunteer
Support the Project Read staff and various promotional, fundraising, and student/volunteer events. Responsibilities may include the following:
- Assist in organizing, advertising, and preparing for Project Read events
- Assist at the event
- Be an ambassador for Project Read and help educate the community about our cause
- Share student and volunteer recruitment information

- Annual Spelling Bee fundraiser (September)
